Why was Shawn Smith so often overlooked by mainstream rock listeners?
For those unaware: Smith is a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist with a killer falsetto, who channeled 70’s rock grooves and moods alongside Prince inspired funky bits through several different acts in the 90’s and early 00’s. Brad may have been the most visible of these acts. Based in Seattle, they were overshadowed by their more commercially successful peers, Pearl Jam And Soundgarden. In fact, Stone Goddard of Pearl Jam is a member of Brad.
This reissue of 1993’s Shame sounds good – the original recording isn’t stellar – but this is the best I’ve heard it.
Bottom line: Shame is terribly underrated. If you’re hankerin’ for a touch of 70’s rock delivered via early 90′s Seattle, then go get it.
