Durand Jones & The Indications
Holy crap, is this a great record.
Durand Jones & The Indications (Colemine Records) are making some killer soul music. Inspired by Sam Cooke, among others, Jones (also a saxophonist) sings his ass off through the eight tracks. Sometimes funky as hell, like Smile, or smooth like Can’t Keep My Cool and heartbreaking – Giving Up.
Based on a brief interview I read, some or all of the record was recorded straight to tape. It sounds fantastic: live, dynamic and at times like it’s hitting the tape hard. The blue vinyl pressing is dynamic and quiet.
