I don’t know that, hum something else…
when do we begin to get back
everything we’ve ruined
who’s gonna throw the line
to save each and every life
when the trouble come down
Recognize the song? There’s a relatively small group out there that does, I suspect. I’m sure we are all familiar with the disconnect felt when the music (or any art or thing) you hold dear draws blank stares. It’s music – at some point talking about it is futile. And necessary, unfortunately. It wasn’t always like this.
Satchels EDC is a landmark on my map, which – both then and now – represents something more than just rocking balls. Then it was the idea of freedom, and fighting the good fight…it was my band against the world. Naive, yes.
Many ( most?) people today don’t know the band, and will first recall their massively successful peers who broke out of the Pacific Northwest in the 90’s. Shawn Smith has remained at the top of my list all these years. He made the kind of music I wanted to back then, and I connected to the music. And, like other music from this time, the songs remind me of the people who were in my life then.
Smiths older songs – especially the more recent live versions – remind me what we had. The man’s got heart. Makes me want to give back. There’s only one way I know how.
