Mitski: Puberty 2
Mitski is new to me, so I’ve no context yet and can’t compare to the previous releases. I dig it because it’s a bit of a surprise.
I’m struggling to nail down what Mitski’s voice and vocal style on the majority of this record remind me of. The contrast of her often lovely, dreamy vocal parts and harmonies, and the lyric content is at times unsettling…like a David Lynch soundtrack. It’s not menace lurking beneath her crooning on these tunes, but a complex mix of emotion – still, it amounts to a similar listening experience.
Perhaps what’s most important is this depth makes Puberty 2 more interesting than much of the indie pop/rock releases I’ve heard this year.
