Nina Simone: Little Girl Blue
Recently grabbed this reissue of Nina Simone’s first recording. I’m sure I don’t need to say how incredibly remarkable she was, but there’s no denying her voice and talent on this initial session. She was 25 years old in 1957, when this was recorded. It was not released until 1959.
Ok, first thing – this recording is fantastic. The clarity and presence are so engaging – her voice is right there in the room with us. The only thing is her voice is panned hard left, which usually takes some adjusting to, for me.
It’s cool to hear her early work, knowing the heights she later reached.
