Richard Buckner: Surrounded
Saw Richard Buckner at the Rhythm Room in Phoenix on Wednesday night.
He appears soft-spoken and well, there’s not a lot of chatter between songs, but instead he worked through a long list of songs during the 90 minute set. I found myself drawn in slowly and by the last tune, I was hanging on each note.
If you haven’t heard him yet, you should. Alt-country is the common categorization, if you need one. He’s a great songwriter who has been recording since the 90’s, and has a devoted following, as demonstrated tonight by the small crowd’s familiarity and apparent love for his songs. Generally somber in tone, his lyrics often feel like fragments that only allude to a larger picture. I dig it. In fact, in the liner notes, the lyrics are printed as part of a larger piece of prose – the words excluded from the lyric highlighted in red. An intriguing view into his methods.
He’s touring the West Coast next and through parts of the Midwest over the next month. Run out and catch one of our great, and mostly unknown American songwriters.
