Sparklehorse: It’s a Wonderful Life
I’ve already posted about this record once, but it belongs on the Record of the Day list, so here we are.
2001’s It’s a Wonderful Life found Linkous collaborating much more than on previous records. Among others, the guests included Tom Waits, PJ Harvey and Nina Persson.
Mark Linkous wrote strange and beautiful songs, filled with surreal lyrics often delivered through a haze of distortion. And though grounded by familiar instrumentation, it was all cluttered with noise. They have atmosphere, these tunes, even if the space they exist in is at times claustrophobic. Despite all this, the fragile melody lingers. There is complex emotion here, and at first listen you may think it too somber. While I agree to a point, I submit that in time Linkous’ unique vision will reveal itself to be more.
