Perfect From Now On was released in January 1997. Whoa. It’s always been my favorite BtS record, because while their other releases are strong, I’ve a thing for meandering, grand rock songs. I do. And while Doug Marsch is also a musicians guitar player, he also excels at both writing melodies and arranging. So, despite […]
How great is it to discover new music you love, especially when it’s nearly 60 years old?! I’m a fan of drummer Shelly Manne, and have been since I made a fantastic discovery about a decade ago that also happened to send me down the high-end/vintage audio path I’m on today. A Brief History I […]
David Lynch’s Twin Peaks returns in May for Season 3. Damn. I don’t have words to describe my excitement. Showtime In the meantime, the Fire Walk With Me soundtrack is getting the vinyl reissue treatment this week. Death Waltz

Sunday night at Comerica Theater in Phoenix, Brittany Howard and band brought it. It – as in they put almost every rock show I’ve seen in the past 5 years to shame. Howard is well-known for her powerful presence and incredible voice, so I’ll not say much beyond she hurt my feelings. Everything came together here […]
Yuck. I didn’t catch the London based bands first record when it arrived in 2011. Their latest, Stranger Things, was released in February this year – this is what brought them to my attention – and, at first listen has a more power pop sound than their debut. I prefer the latter, but if you […]
Ray Lamontagne gone to the Dark Side. Psychedelic and languid, though heavy at times. Jim James of My Morning Jacket produced and is featured as a player too. The recording is hazy and fuzzed out – I dig it.
I didn’t love Gary Clark Jr’s studio records. They are good, but, the production on the first release just didn’t bring me back after the first couple listens. The Story of Sonny Boy Slim is much more interesting for me, but, this live record is an entirely different experience. The recording quality varies from good […]
Why was Shawn Smith so often overlooked by mainstream rock listeners? For those unaware: Smith is a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist with a killer falsetto, who channeled 70’s rock grooves and moods alongside Prince inspired funky bits through several different acts in the 90’s and early 00’s. Brad may have been the most visible of these acts. […]
Mehldau is one of my favorites, and this trio record does not disappoint. They cover a range of tunes by Charlie Parker, Lennon and McCartney, and Jon Brion, among others. It’s no surprise that the trio bring depth and emotion to what are in some cases, very simple melodies.
