The Inevitability of the Downbeat
It’s the one, the downbeat. The one we always return to.
We may play across it, and, briefly experience the freedom of stepping out, but ultimately it’s the one that has the last word.
I find myself thinking about endings, and how in the past I did my best to avoid them, all the while excusing my dodginess with some internal pseudo-philosophical mantra that nothing really ends.
It does, though – end.
I practiced it playing, and, worshipped it listening. There’s nothing like the final resolve of your favorite piece of music. We anticipate that one like nothing else, in the moment. That ending allows us to savor the high (and low) points leading to it.
Again, I need my musical past to teach my current self the wisdom of the downbeat.
