The Vintage Project: Klipsch Forte – something’s missing…
Ok, so I ran the Forte at low volumes for several hours, and they did start to open up a bit. Mids were fairly open, considering the age and condition, and bass was impressive. That said, the overall sense was that they were very dark…so, I suspected a tweeter was shot. The right channel. Not a big deal, as I fully intended to upgrade the tweeters with Crites titanium diaphragms.
I pulled the right horn unit first, and tested it – yep – dead. Pulled the other and it too, was shot…
Oh well – again, this simply moved my schedule for mods up a bit.
I don’t know what year these were built – the tags are long gone – but, all the parts are original.
I emailed Bob Crites and ordered the tweeter parts, as well as his Forte crossovers. If I’m going to rewire these boxes, I may as well do it all at once. I’ve got my Duelund tinned copper wire prepped too. Pretty excited to get these things singing.
It’ll be a couple weeks before there’s any more news on the electronics. In the meantime I will work on the cabinets and stands.
Be back soon – thanks for listening.
