The Vintage Project: Klipsch Forte I
This year I decided I would hunt some vintage kit. Been thinking about it for years, and now it’s time to move. I hope to run several projects this year – we’ll see. We’re starting with a 30+ year old pair of loudspeakers. I found the pair at a great price in the East valley yesterday. We’ll go further back in time, budget allowing, but I think this modest pair is a good start.
Here we are. I’ve got a pair of 30 year old Klipsch Forte warming up by the light of a tiny fire. Thermionic style. The stands are in rough shape, but we’ll take care of that. Fortunately, the cabinets fared better, and electronically they appear to be fine.
We’re going to give them a couple days to get comfortable, and then we’ll sit down for some critical listening. I assume these have been collecting dust in someone’s storage for a while, so gotta give them a chance to shake it off.
I’m driving the Forte with my 2 watt Bottlehead amp for the moment. Matt at ToolShed Amps is building me a Euphoria45 stereo amplifier! 2-3 watts, and big tone. Starting to stock up on tubes, in preparation for it’s arrival. Can’t wait.
Once I’m familiar with their sound we’ll start planning the mods:
Full crossover upgrade, with my favorite caps and some resistors I’ve read about. Duelund 16GA tinned copper wire throughout. Maybe the titanium tweeter upgrade from Crites? Plenty of options. We’ll fill and paint the stands – or, better yet, build new ones.
Be back soon – thanks for listening.
